The PMI awards ceremony last week was hosted by an illusionist which offered a different flavor to the event. He made a comment during his “act” that great project management is a lot like magic in that when it is done properly it seems to be effortless. However, we all know that to achieve a great outcome we have to work hard and plan correctly. His statement was “there is no magic to magic.” Of course the same is true of project management, there is no magic to great project management.
I find that the same thinking can be applied to any type of profession. Whether that professional is an airline pilot or a waiter at a restaurant, when the person is competent and does the job well, it seems that the work is effortless. We as consumers almost never notice the hard work and preparation needed to achieve success.
